ARTISTS STATEMENT

I initially studied and worked in architecture taking up ceramics later in life. I completed my B.A. in Ceramics at Bath Spa University in 2006. Since then I have worked from my studio at home, selling in local galleries, exhibitions and art trails.

I make light-hearted and colourful figures reflecting my appreciation of the human form, my interest in human characteristics and the interaction between people. The figures develop their characters as I make them but are sometimes based on people I have seen in the street or in magazines.

It is important to me that my work has a practical use as well, so they often become vases or lidded pots. They are usually formed from two or three thrown pieces which I alter and shape - similar to cutting and shaping fabric when making clothes, which I also enjoy.

Quite often I am commissioned to make a specific person as a present (See Portraits). It helps if I have seen the person in real life but often I only have photos to work from.

For the past few years, I have been part of a group exhibition in Lyme Regis and for this I have made ceramics with a seaside theme including a series of ships - Reader ship, Court ship, Ship of Fools among others (See Ships).

I am producing new themes and ideas all the time. New work can be seen here(new work) or by following me on facebook etc.,
